Finally! Something to post about!
Rather than a lame post about cooking simply to pacify my parents, I actually have something to post about... Roses! I also have tons of pics from it (some of which I will soon have posted on webshots here.)
So. Roses. Big old sporting tournament between Lancaster University (Red Rose) and York University (White Rose). 40 years old. All sports teams from both universities compete in at least one game. "Sports" range from Football (soccer) & Rugby to Ballroom Dancing. This year, it was held at York University in, you guessed it, York. For more info behind the Roses tournament, click here.
The weekend went like this:
Saturday:
- Got on the coach at 9am for the 3 hour drive to York. Suffice to say that it was definitely the "scenic" route. Saw tons of sheep, old churches and one or two buildings that looked like castles. It would have been beautiful if it hadn't been so windy and hilly and carsick-inducing.
- Arrived at York University around 12pm and shown to our lovely accomodation: the wooden floor of a dining hall. This is a picture of our wonderful lodging from right before we left on Sunday (it's much cleaner than it had been because everyone was getting packed up).

- Went and watched some of the different games. Got to see cricket - complete with boys in V-neck sweaters.
(cricket pitch)

Then, went and hung out near the beer tent and watched the basketball boys play human foosball. (It was no coincidence that they stuck the blow up games near the beer tents.) The game was pretty hilarious. It was the American boys versus the World and, of course, the Americans ended up getting competitive and cheating by the end.
(Human Foosball)

Next, we went and jumped around in a blow up thing. Got to act like five year olds and tried to tackle one another. Very, very fun.
(Tackle)

Afterwards, we took a break from the blowup stuff and watched Rugby. Saw guys flip one another and pound each other into the ground. Way cooler than stupid cricket. (Also... while cheering from the sidelines, I got to see the finest beer bong since I've been here - obviously, it was by an American.)
(rugby match)

- Then, we all went back to the hall and got ready for dinner. Unlike the hair-straightening, short dress wearing, constantly giggling cheerleaders and other psychos that were sharing the hall with us, we chose not to pay 13 pounds ($26 dollars) to go to the Rose Ball (basically a grade school dance held in a gym with bad music). Instead, the basketball girls and guys went out for a great dinner in town. I had a goat cheese & leek starter, risotto & dolcelatte aubergine something or other & wine. The food was great and the company was even better.
(a toast to the season... check out the hair... shaved and died red for Lancaster)

(some of the boys... Andy (American), Andy, Rich (both English), Jorgen (Norwegian?)

(Matching Red Roses on Bugs & Josh)

(Most of the boys team... note that Josh (American) is a natural jackass)

i don't know what happened to my pictures of the girls :(... will have to get some at our upcoming team dinner
- After dinner, there were some awards presented.
(Jorgen giving European-style kisses to Squeeze for her award)

(Jorgen looking pleased to give kisses to Chris for hers)

(No kisses, just handshake, for MVP Jeff)

- Then, we hit the bars in town.
(it's hard to see, but he kept lighting his shots on fire)

(Andy, Me, Bugs... splitting Vodka & Redbull... first time I've had that combo since beginning of Sophomore year... does anyone else remember that night? Fire drill in Clarke Tower... a very embarassed Amanda & I...? I kept that night in mind as I drank this and made sure I learned my lesson & didn't mix it with medicine...)

(sidenote on these pictures... we spent the day outside in the wind and got drenched more than once... I was misinformed and thought this was a sports trip, so didn't bring hairdryers, straighteners or large quantities of makeup like the cheerleaders and other froo froo girls... so, take that into account)
(some of the group... they all have ADD)

(Chris, Hannah and I liked this pole in quaint York)

- Best part of the night... found a soap fountain! Spent quite awhile covering everyone in foam!
(Squeeze by the fountain)

(part of the group... don't give ADD kids alcohol or foam)

this got long with all the pics & I have important things to do (like open my Econ book and burn some dinner)... I'll finish later ....
